Georg Hochberg

Prof. Dr. Georg Hochberg (Germany) is an evolutionary biochemist that works at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and the Marburg University.  He received his scientific training and PhD in systems biology at the University of Oxford (England) and further refined his education at the University of Chicago (USA) as a post-doctoral researcher with a special focus on evolutionary biochemistry. After becoming an independent research group leader at the Max Planck Institute, he was recently appointed to a full-professor position at the Department of Biology of Marburg University. Dr. Hochberg studies the evolution of protein complexes through biochemical, structural and computational approaches. Specifically, he uses ancestral amino acid sequence reconstruction to resurrect long extinct protein complexes protein to study their salient functional and structural attributes on evolutionary time scales.
